Whither shall I flee?
Posted By admin1 on July 11, 2009
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me (Psalms 139: 7-10).
O’ Lord, thou hast searched me and known me (Psalms 139:1). Have you seriously considered that there is no place we would go and hide from God? No matter where we are God is still there, because he is omnipresent. For even the night shall be light about me (Psalms 139:11). This was the case with Adam and Eve. After eating of the forbidden fruit, they hid themselves from the presence of the Lord. But God already knew their condition, their mind, hence when they were not at their usual place he asked: hast thou eaten of the tree? (Genesis 3:11). God himself is our hiding place. There is not a place where we can hide from God. No matter where we go, God will find us.
Sometimes we hold secrets, which seem only to be known to nobody else but us. Yet we forget that the presence of God is ever with us. For the scripture tells us that God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good or evil (Ecclesiastes 12:14). Ananias and Sapphira, just like us had a secret which was known to nobody else but them. The scripture reminds us that there is no word in my tongue, but O’ Lord, thou knowest it altogether (Psalms 139:4). The Spirit of Truth revealed to the apostles the deceit and conspiracy of Ananias and Sapphira. They sold a possession and secretly kept back part of the price and brought a certain part. But Peter asked why they have lied. Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God (Acts 5:1-4). Whilst we can hide our thoughts and motives from one another, yet God sees through them, and is acquainted with all our ways (Psalms 139:3).
Even though Elisha healed Naaman still he refused gifts from him. Gehazi followed Naaman secretly, and requested gifts in the name of his master Elisha. Gehazi did not want Naaman nor Elisha to know of his lies. God knows us and understands our thoughts afar off (Psalms 139:2). The absence of people does not mean the absence of God. Gehazi thought nobody has seen him. But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no whither. And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee?…(II Kings 5:25-26). Though we can hide from one another and run from one another, but God’s right hand will hold us.
Nobody saw Cain slew his brother Abel, yet God knew, hence asked Cain where is thy brother Abel? (Genesis 4:3-13). Jonah too, found out that no matter where we go, God is already there. Jonah was running away from the presence of the Lord. He boarded a ship going to Tarshish instead of Nineveh (Jonah 1:1-17). The raging sea and the tempest were the sign of the presence of God. And Jonah knew that his disobedience was causing the storm, for God understands our thoughts afar off (Psalms 139:2). The presence of the Lord in the depths of the sea found Jonah, and compelled Jonah to go to Nineveh as he was sent.
Criminals know something important, which believers don’t. Criminals never hide from one another. They hide and run away from law officers. They know that law officers will bring judgment on them. But Believers are not so. Believers often hide and sneak from one another. We fear what others will say or do should they find out the wrongs we are doing. We forget that God sees us even when others don’t. We must fear God knowing that he is everywhere all the time. That is an overwhelming presence nobody can get away from!!! There is no place to run from God, for even His right hand shall hold us (Psalms 139: 10).
Sometimes when we lie one to another, we forget that God hears us. It is not always that people will know that we are lying. But God knows. One of the song writers wrote: “God knows all about me…” Whilst we may be lying to others, God knows all about our secrets. It is a secret to men, but not to God. Instead of running from God, let us run to God, for God is our refuge and strength (Psalms 46:1). God is our hiding place. When the world beats on us, and we have nowhere to run to for safety, God is ever ready to protect us and shield us from all harm. For if we have him, whom shall we fear? (Psalms 27:1), if He is for us who can be against us? (Romans 8:31). Without God we have no security and no safety. But if we abide in him, there we shall find rest unto our souls (St. Matthew 11:28-30).
