A heavy load

Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this things is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone (Exodus 18:18).

God knows how much we can bear, and for how long. Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law watched Moses judge the people of God all day long by himself. It had never crossed Moses mind that this task would be much easier if he has help. Sometimes we know that we need help, but are afraid to ask, or don’t know how to ask for it. But God won’t leave us helpless. He is a very present help in trouble (Psalms 46:1). God will come to our rescue even when we have not asked. For He knows what we need before we even ask (St. Matthew 6:8).

With time, lack of help and lack of counsel will wear us away physically, emotionally and spiritually. Such was the case with Martha. She was busy in the kitchen cooking and cleaning. She could not even enjoy the company of her guests. She comes to Jesus in need of help, saying: Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me (St. Mark 10:40). Martha asked the right person for help. We must know who to call in times of trouble. When we run to the Lord, in times of trouble he shall hide us in his pavilion and he shall hide us in the secret of his tabernacle (Psalms 27:5).

Some times we worry about little things and forsake greater things. Wherefore Jesus answered Martha and said unto her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things. But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part…(Luke 10:41-42). Mary chose what was needful. And what is needful is the word of God. Because in times of trouble the word of God will strengthen us, and through the word we will know that Christ will lighten our burdens (St. Matthew 11:28-30). Though our burdens are heavy for us, the scriptures give us full assurance that Christ can carry them all. All we need to know is where to take them. Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you (I Peter 5:7). Whatever you have which wears you out, take it to Jesus. What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!

Meditation: My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth (Psalms 121: 2).
