Not with the Old Leaven
Posted by admin under: Devotions/Meditations .
Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth (I Corinthians 5:7-8).
The primitive way to leaven food is to let the food go slightly bad, then stop the leavening process so the food is good enough for consumption. This is physical leaven. There is also spiritual leaven.
The presence of Spiritual leaven is often the result of walking in the flesh. Apostle Paul says if we put on Jesus Christ (Romans 13:14) and walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16) then we shall not fulfil the lusts of the flesh. Any unrighteousness will defile us hence Paul writes : “Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?” (I Corinthians 5:6). For it is the things that come from within that defile us (St. Mark 7:15).
We have been delivered from spiritual bondage, thus from spiritual Egypt. Let us move onto victory, “forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, pressing toward the mark for the prize of high calling in God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14) , by seeking those things which are above where Christ is (Colossians 3:1). Those things which are above are: righteousness, repentence, forgiveness, love, meekness: are the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22).
Walking in the Spirit will result in the fruits of the Spirit and thus drive out any leaven in our lives. ”And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:24-25).
Meditation: Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me (Psalm 51:10).
