Serve the Lord with gladness (Part III)

Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee (Deuteronomy 5:16).

As young children, it may seem easier to obey our parents out of fear and also because we depend on them. Moreover they can withhold benefits and punish us if we disobey them.  As adults being independent and self reliant may fool us and lead us to believe that we do not need the counsel and guidance of our parents anymore.  There are benefits in obeying our parents even when we are grown:

  • The good advice and counsel of our parents can prevent us from making costly mistakes. Esther took the advice of Mordecai in all things. She became a queen (Esther 2:10) and saved a nation  (Esther 4:6-17). Moses’ load became lighter after taking the advice of his father-in-law (Exodus 18:14-27).
  • Rehoboam did not value the wise counsel of the old men, but listened to his peers instead (I Kings 12: 3-14). As a result the nation rebelled against him.
  • Rebuke not an elder (I Timonthy 5:1). Do not yell, quarrel, argue or talk back to elders. Be meek and listen to them: ” There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother (Proverbs 30:11) and are disobedient to parents (Romans 1:30; II Timothy 3:2).
  • Do not despise parents when they are old (Proverbs 23:22). Instead provide for them like Ruth provided for Naomi (Ruth 2:11,18). Do not rob them nor steal from them (Proverbs 28:24). Remembering that when we were young and helpless, they sacrificed all for our well being.
  • Hold onto the godly teachings of your parents even when they (our parents) are no more. God blessed the Rechabites (Jeremiah 35) for upholding their fathers’ teachings.

True honour to our parents shows up when we are adults. The scriptures do not put age limit to honouring our parents.  Even as adults, it is a commandment which we need to uphold. Honouring our parents and other elderly members of the society, will give us dignity and make us honourable in return.

Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord (Colossians 3:20).
