Train up a child (Part IV)

Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying (Proverbs 19:15).

In this last lesson, we will learn and explore few things about discipline. Our children will benefit if we discipline them. Discipline is an act of love. It helps to shape the behaviour of our children. Thereby they also learn the direct relationship between actions and results. The rod and reproof give wisdom: but the child left unto himself bringeth his mother to shame (Proverbs 29″15).

  • Be consistent and persistent. Stick to your words (I Corinthians 15:58). If something is wrong today, it should be wrong in future. Remember that God is the same today, yesterday and forever (Hebrews 13:8). His doctrine and laws are everlasting. “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8).
  • Allow others to correct your children both in your presence and absence (Proverbs 29:17). You can’t be everywhere with your children. Let neighbours, relatives and other adults be your eyes and mouth. The neighbours and relatives correct them out of love for both you and your children (Proverbs 13:24).
  • Most importantly, children learn by example (II Timothy 1:5). If what we say contradicts what we do, children are likely to conclude that the acceptable thing is what we do than what we say.

These are few ideas which concludes this message of Bringing up children who believe in God. Let us teach them in truth, admonish in love, and be fair when we punish them. When we attack the evil in them and not them as people, children will recognize sin and be able to put the difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean (Leviticus 10:10).
